What Is MCP (Model Context Protocol)? A Simple Explanation

If you've used Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or any AI coding assistant, you've hit the same wall: every conversation starts from zero. The AI doesn't know your preferences, your project history, or even your name. MCP fixes that.

MCP in One Sentence

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI tools connect to external data sources — databases, APIs, files, or services like Mirror Memory — so they can read and use information beyond their training data.

Who Created It?

Anthropic introduced MCP in late 2024 as an open protocol. Since then, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and others have adopted it. It's not owned by any single company — it's an open standard, like HTTP or OAuth.

How Does MCP Work?

Think of MCP like a USB port for AI. Just as USB provides a standard way to connect peripherals to a computer, MCP provides a standard way to connect data sources to AI tools.

The architecture has three parts:

  1. MCP Host — The AI tool (Claude Desktop, Cursor, ChatGPT). It sends requests.
  2. MCP Server — The data provider (like Mirror Memory). It exposes "tools" the AI can call.
  3. Transport — How they communicate (HTTP, stdio, or SSE).

When you ask Claude "What did I decide about the pricing strategy?", Claude calls your MCP server's search_memories tool, gets the relevant memories, and weaves them into its response. You never see the API call — it just works.

What Tools Support MCP?

  • Claude Desktop — Full MCP support (Anthropic built the protocol)
  • Cursor — MCP support for code-aware AI
  • ChatGPT — MCP support via plugins
  • Windsurf, Copilot, Gemini — Growing MCP adoption
  • OpenClaw — Open-source MCP client

Why Should You Care?

Without MCP, every AI conversation is an amnesiac encounter. With MCP, your AI tools can access your personal knowledge base, your project files, your CRM — anything you connect. The AI stops being a generic assistant and starts being your assistant.

How Mirror Memory Uses MCP

Mirror Memory is a personal memory system that stores your thoughts, ideas, and knowledge as searchable vector embeddings. When you connect it to Claude or Cursor via MCP, your AI tools can automatically search your memories — no copy-pasting, no re-explaining context. You think it, Mirror Memory stores it, and every AI you use remembers it.
